Camp Upham Fundraiser Reminder

Here is a reminder for 5th grade parents that the Camp Upham Fundraiser order forms and money are due this Tuesday, December 4th.

General Mitchell Giving Tree

General Mitchell's annual Giving Tree will be beginning Monday, December 3rd.  A red flyer was sent home today with all of the necessary information on it.  December 17th is the day all gifts need to be turned into the office, if you decide to participate.

New Math Unit: Fractions

Starting on Monday, students will begin their work on the Numbers and Operations - Fractions Unit. With the beginning of a new unit, students are regrouped based on their understanding of the topic. Using the results from their fall MAPS test, we will create new groups to ensure that instruction is delivered to each student at their instructional level. In some cases, students will be working with a different teacher. It is common for students to work with multiple teachers throughout the year. As with any topic or skill, there are areas of strength and areas of weakness. We will assure your student that the changes are made to give them the best opportunity for growth.

Golden Awards!

At today's Fish meeting, our class won THREE Golden Awards!  We won awards for great positive behavior in SEL, Gym, and the Lunchroom.  Plus to top it off our class lead the Fish meeting in front of the whole school.  Students from the class volunteered to do speaking parts throughout the meeting.  Everyone did such a nice job, and I have heard from many teachers how great they thought they did.  I just wanted to let you know what amazing children you all have, and I am very thankful for having such a wonderful class! :)

Camp Upham Fundraiser

(Information from Mrs. Amy Graff)

Are you looking for a unique birthday gift?  Or maybe you have started Christmas shopping in November.  Here is an opportunity for you to do some shopping AND help out our fifth graders.  General Mitchell’s 5th Grade Class is sponsoring a fundraiser to help with the cost of our class trip to Camp Upham Woods from May 29-31, 2013.  Nature’s Vision was selected for their wide variety of top quality environmentally themed products. The sale starts today and order forms and money are due on Tuesday, December 4th.  Please ask your 5th grade child for the catalog and order form that was handed out today.  A letter is also included giving you more information about the fundraiser. Please let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks,

Mrs. Graff.

School Sickness

I just wanted to inform you that there has been a "bug" going around school since last week.  Many students in the school have become sick with flu-like symptoms including vomiting.  Last Thursday, 40 students were home or sent home due to this illness.  I just wanted to inform you in case your student has or had these symptoms.  Our classroom has had a total of 5 students with the "bug," and hopefully it doesn't spread to any more students due to a lot of hand washing and sanitizing the room.

Reading "Just Right" Books

In our class, we talk a lot about reading "just right" books.  You may be wondering, what are "just right" books.  These are books that are at your student's reading level; they aren't too easy or too hard.  Well now there is a website that allows you to check to see if the book your student is reading is at their level.  The link is apart of Schloastic and it is called "Book Wizard."  All you have to do is type in the book your student is reading and it will pop up with grade interest level, guided reading level, and lexile level.  When you receive your student's report card within the next week, your student's guided reading level will be on there.  I thought this was a great tool and hopefully you'll get some good information from it!

The website is... http://www.scholastic.com/bookwizard/

Enjoy!
